_{Arne Glimcher, diretor da Pace Gallery, participa pela primeira vez de uma feira no Brasil e fala à seLecT}

A Pace Gallery, com sede em Londres, Nova York e Pequim, tem mais de 50 anos de atividade e representa 72 dos mais consagrados artistas da arte moderna e contemporânea.

Por que a Pace Gallery decidiu participar da SP-Arte Fair? O que exatamente te atraiu para vir ao Brasil?

Decidimos participar da Feira SP-Arte, porque o Brasil é uma economia em rápido crescimento, produzindo colecionadores importantes que conhecemos em feiras internacionais. Vários se tornaram clientes da galeria. E, historicamente, artistas da Pace foram incluídos em algumas exposições importantes no Brasil, desde a Bienal até exposições individuais nos principais museus de arte do país. Ao observarmos os históricos de exposições dos artistas que representamos, percebemos que nossas conexões com o Brasil são mais significativas do que a maioria das pessoas sabe.

Quais artistas o senhor acredita que levantar mais interesse aqui? Por quê?

Nós estaremos exibindo uma secção transversal de artistas e uma gama de mídias, incluindo pintura, escultura, fotografia, vídeo e desenhos, por exemplo. Todo o trabalho em exposição acredito que será interessante para o Brasil, já que são artistas reconhecidos internacionalmente com grande influência em todo o mundo. Obras de Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Chuck Close, Dubuffet Jean, Adolph Gottlieb, Huan Zhang, LeWitt Sol, Martin Agnes, Oldenburg Claes, Robert Rauschenberg, Michal Rovner, Songsong Li, Sugimoto Hiroshi, James Turrell, entre outros, poderão ser vistas em nosso estande. Além disso, estaremos com um grupo de obras de Saul Steinberg que teve uma exposição itinerante de grande sucesso que passou em 2011 pelo Instituto Moreira Salles no Rio de Janeiro, pela Pinacoteca, em São Paulo.

O senhor já tem colecionadores brasileiros entre seus clientes ou você vai começar uma nova rede na SP-Arte?

A cada nova feira de arte no mundo, temos a sorte de encontrar colecionadores que não viajam para Nova York regularmente e, portanto, estão menos familiarizados com a nossa lista de artistas. Nós temos relações no Brasil, mas também buscaremos conquistar um público maior.

Atualmente, a galeria tem sede em três países. Há algum interesse em estabelecer uma sede no Brasil?

A Pace possui filiais em Nova York, Londres e Pequim e, na medida em o Brasil continue a desenvolver colecionadores, torna-se um lugar cada vez mais intrigante, mas não temos nenhuma intenção específica, neste momento, de abrir uma galeria no Brasil. No entanto, a SP-Arte pode influenciar a nossa decisão!

Qual é a sua relação com a arte brasileira? Há interesse em representar algum artista brasileiro?

Nós não nos focamos na arte de qualquer país. Nós representamos extraordinários artistas chineses, britânicos, americanos, e japoneses, por exemplo, e estamos abertos para nos encantar por artistas brasileiros. Estamos ansiosos para que nossa experiência na Feira SP-Arte seja um momento tanto de aprender, como de educar, cheio de surpresas para os brasileiros e para Pace Gallery.

Why did you decide to participate in SP-Arte Fair? What exactly attracted you to come to Brazil?

We have decided to participate in the SP-Arte Fair because Brazil is a fast growing economy, producing significant collectors who we have met at art fairs internationally. Several have become clients of the gallery. And historically, Pace artists have been included in some important exhibitions in Brazil ranging from the Bienal to solo exhibitions in the country’s leading art museums. As we looked at the exhibition histories of the artists we represent, we realized that our connections to Brazil are more significant than most people would know.

Which artists from your portfolio do you believe will raise more interest here? Why?

We will be exhibiting a cross section of artists and a range of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, video, and drawings, for instance. All of the work on view I believe will be interesting to Brazil as the artists are internationally recognized figures in the history of art and their influence is seen worldwide. Works by Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Chuck Close, Jean Dubuffet, Adolph Gottlieb, Zhang Huan, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Michal Rovner, Li Songsong, Hiroshi Sugimoto, James Turrell among others will be on view in our booth. In addition, we will be featuring a group of works by Saul Steinberg who had an immensely successful traveling museum show in 2011 at the Instituto Moreira Salles in Rio and the Associação Pinacoteca Arte e Cultura in São Paulo.

Do you already have Brazilian collectors among your clients or are you going to start a new network in SP-Arte?

At each new art fair around the world, we have the good fortune to meet collectors who do not travel to New York regularly and therefore may be less familiar with our roster of artists. We do have existing relationships in Brazil but we also look forward to engaging with a larger audience.

Currently the gallery has locations in three countries. Is there any interest in establishing a venue in Brazil?

Pace has locations in New York, London, and Beijing and as Brazil continues to develop collectors, it becomes an ever more intriguing venue but we have no specific intention, at this moment, of opening a gallery in Brazil. However, the SP Arte fair may influence our decision!

What is your relationship to Brazilian art? Is there already an interest in representing any Brazilian artist?

We do not consider ourselves to focus on any one country’s art. We represent some extraordinary Chinese, British, American, and Japanese artists for example and we are open to being enchanted by Brazilian artists. We look forward to our experience at the SP-Arte Fair being a time to both learn as well as educate, filled with surprises for the Brazilians and surprises for Pace Gallery.
